Physical Education

The Physical Education curriculum at primary level consists of six strands. These strands are:

We have 60 minutes of timetabled PE classes each week and discretional time is used to facilitate some activities such as aquatics and other out of school events.

Junior Classes

PE Yearly Plan

PE for Special Education at Scoil Aodha Naofa.

We understand the importance of PE for Special Education. This area of learning is essential for the holistic development of pupils with special needs. We provide a comprehensive and inclusive approach to PE provision for pupils with particular developmental needs. We provide a comprehensive self- regulation and sensory programme called Braincalm for all pupils. For more information use this link https://braincalminstitute.com/

This programme is provided in daily sessions of 20 minutes duration throughout the year. Pupils in most need attend at different times as the need arises.

Sensory equipment indoors and outdoors is used to supplement the PE programme also.

Other PE activities which our pupils are involved in include, The Cycle Safe Programme, Yoga- style stretching classes, Westmeath Schools Cross Country Run, Tullamore Rugby Club Tag Rugby Blitz, Cuman na mBunscol and The Active Flag Programme.

Parents and Wider School Community

Parental Involvement in our PE programmes and competitions is advocated at all times where possible. Parents are encouraged to get involved and support our pupils at events and helping to organise these events. Sports for All Day is always a popular event with our parents.

Staff

We also encourage our staff to fully participate in our PE programmes and we enjoy staff Walks for team bonding, staff morale and general wellbeing.

Curriculum Development

As part of the Active School Flag process we prioritise a strand for further development each year. This year we have focused PE for Special Education Needs. The Braincalm Programme has been introduced and developed for all pupils with individual needs. Also to develop the Outdoor and Adventure strand we have developed a bank of resources that are available to all classes. We have also developed an orienteering trail around the school. The Junior Classes have shared their experiences of orienteering on the Class Dojo.

PE Homework

We encourage promoting Physical Education beyond the classroom by assigning physical activity for homework on P.E days. This means that on the day the children have PE, they will also have ‘PE homework’. The pupils were emailed videos and links for demonstrations and classes to practise skills at home with all the family. These were also uploaded onto Seesaw and Dojo foe easy access.

Seachtain na Gaeilge Céilí

To finish Seachtain na Gaeilge the whole school participates in a céilí. We have been very grateful to the talented teachers that have shared their dancing skills and knowledge over the last few years to ensure that all children and teachers can now dance traditional Irish dances such as Ciorcal Mór, The Walls of Limerick and An Dreoilín.

Active Break Every Day

All pupils are encouraged and facilitated to have two active beaks every day. The children are encouraged to run/walk laps of the pitch daily as part of the Active Flag Initiative . Games and skills are practised at every break time. On rainy days classes engage in GoNoodle and Jo Wicks websites for indoor activities.

Junior Classes doing the back support in gymnastics

Our Junior classes have completed their Primary Aquatics Water Safety (PAWS) Course in time for summer.
